NONTRADITIONAL CAREER OPTIONS

Have you considered the benefits of having a job that you really like---one that pays better than average wages, and offers a promising future? You may choose to "follow in your father's footsteps" or do "the same work as all the women in your family", but before you decide, it's a good idea to explore a number of different occupational alternatives. A nontraditional occupation is one in which 75% or more of the people employed in that occupation are of the same sex. Construction work is an example of a nontraditional occupation for women, while nursing is an example for men.

Often a person considering a nontraditional career will need additional training. Training for nontraditional careers can range from relatively short periods - six months to two years - to longer programs offering professional degrees. One way to get training for a nontraditional job in trade and technical fields is to enter an apprenticeship program where you get paid a salary while learning the job. Another possibility is to enroll in a community and technical college, four-year college or university where you can obtain a degree. Regardless of how you get your training, once your training is complete, you will be prepared to enter the nontraditional work world.

If you choose to enter a nontraditional skilled trade or apprenticeship program, you will need solid information on surviving and thriving in the nontraditional workforce. The tips listed in the box below will help you better understand the nontraditional world by providing you with a "real life" picture of a nontraditional workplace. The information may help you adjust and function if you decide on a nontraditional career, or it may assist those of you who are still undecided on following a nontraditional path.
